Books vs. Movies

source
Which do you enjoy more? A book or a movie?

Generally, I side whole-heartedly with books. The new papery smell, the quick flip of the page, the heaviness when held in hand. It’s exciting to look at it from the spine and see how far you’ve read. Plus, sometimes the intricacies of a book plot is so much better than a movie’s, where there are time limitations and reality to conquer.

I’ve always maintained that the movie producer people should look to books for better movies. There are SO many good plots and good characters. Rather than continually reviving the Comic Book Era, why not adapt a movie from a novel?

However, once my wish comes true, I find that most of the movies based on novels are disappointing. A Walk to Remember, some of the Harry Potter movies, The Tale of Despereaux, Confessions of a Shopaholic, the Kiera Knightley version of Pride & Prejudice.

Then, there are some really great movies that are based on books: Legally Blonde, About a Boy, Howl’s Moving Castle, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the A&E version of Pride & Prejudice.

Granted, I haven’t read every book out there or seen every movie that was based on a book. But, I have noticed a trend: it’s about order.

If I read the book first, then saw the movie. I like the book better.
If I saw the movie first, then read the book. I like the movie better.

There are few exceptions, but for the most part, my theory holds…for myself, at least. Does it hold for you, too?

  1. Hi Karen,

I have recently read Julie and Julia and have watched the movie. I like the movie a lot because it is light-hearted and it gives you hope that love is still a reality in this world with high divorce rates. The movie itself is based on the book Julie and Julia and Julia Child's autobiography so it is not directly adapted from the book. I still like the book though. It just gives you a different vibe than the movie.

The next movie that I am going to watch will be A Time Traveler's Wife which comes out today in DVD. I have read the book and I will update you which one I like more!

My most recent addition of books read is the Twilight Saga book #1. I like the story line, but not necessarily how the book is written. It is filled with teenage drama, but to my surprise, it is pretty entertaining, funny (especially how the book repeatedly emphasizes how good-looking Edward is) and addicting. I didn't go to high school in the States so it fills me in with the drama and humors of everyday high school life. I am on book #2 now and will watch the movies once I am done.
