TGIF & Emma's First Birthday

Emma turned ONE this week!  Happy happy happy!

I keep telling everyone that it is true that the early years go by so quickly.

This month, she survived a trip to Boston (and flew on a plane), learned to throw her food onto the floor (fun fun), stand by herself (without holding onto things), wave good-bye, point to things, sign "more" and "all done", say "more" (first word?!) and sometimes "hi", and take a bath in the big tub.  :)  Just some highlights.

I am so thankful that I didn't break her.
I am also so thankful that I made it a whole year breastfeeding (while working, too).  Yeah!

Happy Birthday, sweet little lambie.  <3

TGIF & Top 10 Baby Things: Part 2

My little lambie turns 1 year old in THREE DAYS!  Can you believe it?

In honor of her birthday, I've compiled a list of our top 10 favorites.  These are items #5-#1.
Did you miss items #10-#6?  Read it here (EDIT)!

Emma went through a giant diarrhea spell around 6months and it lasted for over a month.  Grandma El's diaper rash cream saved her soft little tooshie!  It smells good and goes on better than Desitin.  It is also safe for cloth diapers, meaning it doesn't affect the absorbancy of the diaper.

#4. Puj sink tub

While we only used the Puj sink tub for 3 months (after Emma's umbilical cord fell off), it was great.  I liked that I didn't have to bend over to wash her, especially while I was still healing from delivery.  The tub actually fit in our sink (unlike the big blue one that she uses now).  It has a soft, rubbery surface that is nice against the bare skin, and unfolds flat for easy storage and drying.

#3. Itzbeen timer

I use this EVERY DAY!  I've always used the Itzbeen buttons a bit differently than what they're designated for, but it totally works and keeps my "mom brain" from forgetting how long it's been since I nursed/diapered/started a nap.  At the beginning, it was so hard to mentally calculate anything, I was so tired all the time.  I also relabeled some of the buttons with a piece of tape, to keep track of how many minutes I was nursing on each side.  Nowadays, I only use it while nursing to keep track of how long between feedings.

#2. Miracle Blanket swaddle

Emma was a "spirited baby" (according to the Baby Whisperer) at the beginning.  She hated sleeping.  She wanted to be awake all the time looking at everyone.  The Miracle Blanket totally helped.  I bought it on a whim from Zulily.  I could never get the hang of swaddling with a normal blanket, she'd cry and cry and cry.  If she slept, her arms always escaped and she'd wake herself up.  This eliminates operator error.  We only used it for about 5 months (because the pediatrician suggested we wean her off around 4 months old), but it was a great relief.

#1. Phillips Soothie pacifier
(at 3 weeks old)

The Phillips Soothie pacifier that the hospital gives to babies/moms who want it has been a sleep saver.  I first read that pacifiers were bad for nursing babies, and I was hesitant to use it, and I know that some moms don't advocate using one, but I don't regret using it at all.  My lactation consultant Doris said they are very helpful because it's a way for babies to comfort themselves, so after she told me that, we used it a lot.  We tried not to use it during the day when we held her.  But at times, it kept her satisfied when she wasn't hungry.  It kept her soothed when she was trying to sleep.  We still give it her at night in her crib and sometimes in the carseat.  She doesn't always use it, but she can find it an put it into her mouth by herself if she wants to.  She also likes to chew on it when she is teething.  I never had a problem with using another type of pacifier, so we just went with this one.

Ah!  Done with the Top 10!  Did you use any of the 10 items yourself?
Happy Friday!

TGIF & Top 10 Baby Things: Part 1

Since Emma is turning 1 year old *gasp* in a couple of weeks, I thought I'd honor that by making a top 10 list of baby items that we both really loved and used almost daily.  These are items #10-#6...  ENJOY!

#10. Baby Jogger City-mini stroller

This is Halle Berry demonstrating how light and easy it is to carry this stroller around!  Seriously, it is that simple.

When my husband and I were researching strollers, my one must-meet requirement was that the stroller be easy to lift and fold (so that my petite-ness could handle it).  We went to BuyBuy Baby (which has the best customer service, btw) and one of the workers clued us into the Baby Jogger line of strollers.  While the stroller is a little expensive, it is seriously awesome.  It's lightweight, it turns on a dime because of the 3-wheel system.  It also has a convertible attachment so you can just plop a carseat right in, when the baby can't sit up yet.  The best part is the fold mechanism: you pull a strap in the seat of the stroller and the whole thing collapses down.  You never have to push any buttons or wrangle it flat to stuff in the trunk of the car.  It is AWESOME.

#9. Grovia snap-close diapers

So, I've talked about washable diapers before.  While diapering is not the funnest part of having a baby, it is necessary and Grovia has made it easier and environmentally friendly.  (My husband was even on board with the cloth diapering!)  The shells (outer, waterproof covers) have a variety of patterns, which are cute all on their own.  And then inside soaker pad is super absorbent.  We've only had a few leak problems that mostly had to do with when she started eating solids.

Personally, I like the snap closures because they last longer (after a year, the velcro--like in the picture above--has lost its stickiness).  The downside to the Grovias is that the leg openings are not adjustable, so that you have to wait until the baby's thigh is big enough to fill it on the smallest snap-setting.  For Emma, it meant she couldn't wear these until she was over 1-month old...skinny legs!

As for laundry, I do it every other day.  Cold rinse, then hot wash w/ detergent, then cold rinse.  Then, it goes in the dryer for about 1.5 cycles on low heat.  It means you have to go into the laundry room three times (after the 1st cold rinse, transferring to dryer, and running dryer for another .5 cycle), but it's really not too bad.

As for water/heat/electric bills...our water bill was barely affected...it went up maybe $3/month.  Our gas bill (we have gas heating) went up about $20-25, depending on the month.  I'm not really sure how our electric bill was affected because we turned on our a/c more than usual over the summer and opened the fridge more often, so I think it was just higher because of adding another person to the household.

In the end, washable has still saved us money.  You can calculate figures here, if you're interested in going the way of the cloth.

I found these through the duetletterpress blog.  She recently had a baby and listed these toys as fascinating and versatile.  They really are.  Emma loves these.  When she was younger, she only stared at the colors.  When she got older, she reached for them.  Now, she bangs them together, she taps them against her other toys to make noise, she chews on them because they feel good on her teething gums.  They unlink and you can put a couple here and there...some in her play area, some on her stroller, some on her carseat.

#7. Beco Gemini carrier
 source

This is similar to the Ergo carrier in that it is designed to not squish a baby's "bits," unlike the Babybjorn...meaning, it doesn't hold the baby by the crotch, but by the baby's squishy bottom.

When I went back to work, I started wearing Emma on me when I came home while I did some housework, washed my breastpump parts, and took her for a walk.  We both liked the closeness after a full day without each other.  It's pretty easy to use and I like that it's convertible: inward-facing, front-facing, side-carrying, and back-carrying.  I still use this almost daily.

#6. Carter's onesies

I know Carter's is a bit expensive, but these fit the best on my slender Emma.  You can find their budget-friendly line at Target.  They're soft, slim, and long.  The shoulders aren't too wide and, of course, they're machine washable, machine dryable.

Plus, I'm all for easy baby managing.  My husband tells me I'm a "no-frills" mom.  I don't really do the accessories: the hair bows, the frilly socks, the cute dresses, the unnecessary shoes.  I'm a mom who sometimes skips the pants.  So, onesies are my favorite clothing item.  It makes for simple diaper changes, and simple dressing in the morning.  Love these and their cute patterns!

I feel like I'm a walking advertisement today.  ha.
Happy Friday, everyone!

TGIF & Emma 10mo

She's not cruising yet, just leaning against the couch when I put her there.  :)

My daughter turned 10 months old this week.
I was looking back at old videos of her, where she's a fidgety bundle of baby not even aware of her limbs while lying on her back and bubbling at the mouth because her drool came in.  So cute.  And yet a little sad.

It's like my friend Christy says, "One of my friends told me that one of the hardest things about motherhood is you're in a constant state of grieving something that will never be again."  That is totally true.

But, it made me think about my writing, too.  My writing is not the same now as it was 10 years ago.  And I'm the better for it.

So, my daughter will grow, but it's a good thing.  I'll just keep telling myself that, while a small part of me wishes she'd stay a baby forever.

TGIF! & Emma 9mo

Yay, it's Friday again!  Woohoo!
My little lambie turned 9 months old this week, which means that she has been alive just as many days as she was gestating in my belly.  Kinda sad, kinda scary, and kinda exciting at the same time.  (I know babies are hearty, but it still amazes me that I haven't damaged her in some stupid way.)

Some highlights of this past month:
* she got a small cold, but nothing serious that required a trip to the doctor.
* she started scooting backward on hands and knees.
* she's in a "stranger danger" phase, but still likes looking at people.
* she's not eating as much as before, but still eating.  Butternut squash is her favorite food.
* she's still babbling like crazy; I'm sure she's going to be a chatty Kathy when she grows up.
* she loves music, listening to it and waving her arms to the beat.

A visit to the doctor told us that she is still petite (below the 0% in weight).  I still think all of her fat goes into her cheeks.  Cute little girl.

Anyway, happy Friday!

Weekly writing progress: finished editing and rewriting my new Ch.1.  Am thinking about a new Ch.2, too.  The Monday night hosting last week didn't work out...too many people sick or unavailable.  I hope this cold thing blows over soon!

If you're the praying kind, please pray for Emma's nanny and her family.  Sicknesses have been cycling in and out of her family for almost a month.  :(

TGIF! & Emma 8mo

It's Friday!!! Hooray!

Today, I'm going to blab about my little lambie, who turned 8 months old this past weekend.  She's sitting up so well and her belly is getting so fat (from eating her beloved puree'd fruit & veggies).  It's been a really fun month.  She's getting so active and is finally over the separation anxiety phase.  She still hates naps, but she gets good night-sleep.  She's starting to pre-crawl (balancing on her hands and toes).

People keep telling me that I'm going to regret saying I'm looking forward to her mobile phase, but I really like her independence already.

Can her cheeks get any bigger?  :)  She's such a cutie.

Weekly writing progress: I was able to meet with my writer's group this past Monday and got some good feedback on the end of Part 1.  Wrote about 2 hours this past week.  Need to start outlining some important plot points that's been gestating for a few months.

Grow, baby, grow!

I go to a Mommy and Me group on Thursday mornings (since I'm off of work for the time being and need something to do). I met the founder of the group, IBCLC-certified (lactation consultant) Doris Christensen, when my daughter was only a few days old. I was having trouble breastfeeding, so we contacted her.

She is the main reason why I am still breastfeeding today. If you ever need advice or help about breastfeeding and babies, contact Doris: www.pump-n-go.com. She is a Godsend.

And I also couldn't have continued breastfeeding without the awesome support of my wonderful friends: Christy, Kathleen, Becky K., and Becky W. Seriously, who knew that breastfeeding was so difficult!? And who knew that you need some major support!? THANKS, friends!

Anyway, all this to say that Emma is growing slowly, but steadily. Since she turned 3 months old a few days ago, I thought some progression pictures would be nice. :)

0 Months (actually 10 days old)

One Month

Two Months

Three Months (she's really taken to staring at her feet!)

I can't believe how fast it's all going. My little lambie is already so grown up! How time flies...

Designs by Lavender's Blue

source

Before my daughter was born, I asked my crafty and talented friend Becca Thongkham to design a birth announcement. I asked for something "sweet and simple" with a lambie (since I love them, and her nursery is decorated with them). Here's what she came up with! They're so cute. We also included a picture when we mailed them. :)

*Did I ever mention that my daughter's name is Emma? If I haven't, now you know. :)

Going Natural!

source

I know the topic of "going natural" is weird. This post is about a specific type of going natural: washable cloth diapers...in fact, washable anything!

At first, I was really doubtful about using washable diapers. I thought it would be like when my mom used them...those thick bumpy, wooly rectangular cloths that you safety pin on the sides. And then, one lady I knew told me that she used cloth diapers and showed me a few of hers.

With society going back to nature (with food, with fabrics, with supporting the local), the business of cloth diapering has really improved since 30 years ago. Cloth diapers have so many varieties now: all-in-ones, one size, pockets, hybrids, pre-folds with waterproof covers. And so many colors and patterns, it's almost fashionable to be a cloth diapered baby! :)

I bought all of my cloth diapers from GoGo Natural, a business by Meredith Abney of Chandler, AZ (support the local!). I went to her house and she gave me the full tutorial on cloth diapering in the 21st century. It's pretty cool. She's awesome.

Anyway, I just started my baby on cloth at the beginning of this month, because her thighs were finally big enough so that poop and pee wouldn't leak. It's been pretty fun. Definitely more colorful than the basic Pampers. :) It's a little harder to tell if she's wet, but I really like the fact that I'm not putting more waste into the landfill.

The whole system is so economically friendly, too. You can get a full diaper set for your baby and use the same set until he/she is potty trained (and even use the same set your your 2nd baby!)...all for less than $400, depending on the brand you go with.

Pretty awesome, huh? Yay, going back to nature and saving money!

(I use a combination of the GroVia diapers and Fuzzibunz...I love them.)

Ah, a Leave of Absence...

While I don't think a mother has time to complete a manuscript, I do think she can take advantage of any extra time she might have.

My little cutie is at the 2-month mark, and we've established The Baby Whisperer's routine of Eat-Activity-Sleep-You time (E.A.S.Y.), and I've found myself with at least 4 hours/day of free time. The baby is asleep, so I have time to check my e-mail, surf the web, play a computer game, watch a Netflix movie, talk with my husband. Granted, not all of those things get done in one day, but there is quite a lot more time than I thought I'd have.

Anyway, all this to say that I am glad I work for a Fortune 500 company and am allowed 18 weeks of maternity leave. What a blessing!

Where I've been...

During my last giant blog break (though not completely planned), I have been taking care of this little one. :)

Yes, I gave birth to a swet baby girl in late May...and I can't believe she's already one month old.

It's definitely been a bumpy ride, dealing with breastfeeding problems, weight gain problems, getting her to sleep...and, of course, adjusting to having a baby in the house while recovering from labor & delivery. A huge change in perspective.

My life now revolves around hers...especially when she's hungry. I've noticed that the days go by so quickly. We're enjoying our reading time (right now it's Where the Mountain Meets the Moon) in the morning and all too soon, we're preparing for bed and the cycle repeats itself.

I'm slowly easing myself back into the writer's mentality...I do miss it: the quiet time, the creative process, my beloved characters, and going to writers groups to give and get support.

Things are looking up, so I hope blogging will become more regular and time for writing will open up soon. :)
